Making your own trail mix is fun and each of your children can get in on the action and design their own.
Start by handing each child his or her very own zippered style sandwich bag or quart sized bag.
After dispensing the bags set out the following and help each child to put a portion (we use a 1/3 measuring cup) into their bag. Here are some ideas of what to put into their trail mix bags (remember, if a child doesn’t like a particular ingredient, give them more of another that they do like and avoid the one that they don’t care for). Mix and match or create specific “names” for certain ingredients in bags and allow kids to help.
Small snack sized pretzels
Small snack sized butter crackers
Candy coated chocolate candies (with or without peanuts or caramels)
Crunchy cheese snacks
Small bagel bits or larger bagel bits that are broken up
Whole wheat cereal squares or circles
Fruit leather sliced into smaller sized bits
Fruit snacks or gummy snacks
Bits of licorice whips (red or black although red tend to do better in trail mixes per kids)
Broken up bits of chocolate bars
After each child has filled his or her bag with their favorites, they should then zip their bag closed and shake it well to mix it all up.
Some families make everyone their own bag, others make a huge bag of trail mix and then portion it out accordingly.
You can be as creative as possible. Buy the above-mentioned ingredients in bulk and design your family’s very own style of trail mix and wait for the rave reviews.
Snack on these whenever a snack is desired and someone is hungry. These are as healthy as you choose to make them.
