Summer is the time for picnics, potlucks, and camping meals shared with friends. When you are packing your cooler for that long awaited camping trip, be sure to follow a few food safety tips.
Choose a cooler that is well insulated. It must be able to keep food cold for a long time without leaking. You can freeze some of your camping food ahead of time and use it as ice inside your cooler. Pack the frozen food at the bottom of the cooler and the not frozen items on top.
Try not to open the cooler too often. Each time you lift the lid you allow the coolness to escape and increase the rate of temperature rising inside. Keep your cooler sealed as long as you can and you may consider packing two coolers with the first day’s food in one and later day’s food in the other.
Keep meat well packaged and separate from other foods. Make sure none of the drippings from the meat leak into the cooler. You can check on the federal food safety guidelines at: Basics For Food Handling Safely.
We hope you enjoy your camping days and have many delicious camping meals. Your cooler will provide you many days of food protection if you keep these few things in mind.
